A Little History of Redlands
Redlands was once a thriving navel orange producing region. In fact, for close to 75 years, it was the largest orange producing region in the world. With over 15,000 acres of citrus groves, it was a thriving industry.
But citrus wasn’t the only jewel in Redland’s crown. Redlands, at the turn of the 20th century, was considered the “Palm Springs” of that century. Roses were planted all over the city, with the first center medians with trees or gardens built in between roads, creating a picturesque scene of life in California. The area was beautifully kept, with dramatic mountain backdrops. Add that to its Victorian and historical architecture, it was truly a jewel of the Inland Empire.
While many of the orange groves have disappeared, Redlands still holds onto its history, with 2,500 acres of orange groves still in the area and one packing house remaining in production. And it is the proud recipient of three presidential visits: William McKinely, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Taft.
In the winter, you’ll step outside to smell the sweet, fragrant scent of the orange blossoms in bloom. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.
