Self Storage Mistakes to Avoid

Moving boxes and furniture into a storage unit may seem like a daunting task, but avoiding these common storage mistakes can make life much easier and less stressful. Our goal at STOR-N-LOCK Self Storage is to make storage easy!

Not properly stacking boxes

When you have a tall stack of boxes, the last thing you want is for the whole pile to come crashing down. Make sure that boxes are not stacked too high, that cardboard boxes are sturdy enough to support the weight (we have high quality boxes for sale in each STOR-N-LOCK office), that your boxes are stacked evenly, and that heavier boxes are stacked on the bottom.

Not sufficiently protecting fragile items

Bubble wrap is a great way to help keep your fragile items such as glass safe and protected in self storage. Packing peanuts are great as well. Wrapping fragile items in newspaper can help protect your possessions, but newspaper on its own is often not sufficient to keep items from breaking if something gets knocked over.

Not insuring items

While we take every precaution we can to keep your items safe and secure, there is no telling when nature will strike with lightning, tornado, or flood. If we do suffer from such a catastrophe, it is best to have your items insured while in self storage.

Failing to label boxes

Consider keeping a detailed spreadsheet or taking pictures of the contents of each box that you can refer back to in the future. This will save a lot of hassle when you are looking for one of your items, and will make the moving process a lot smoother. You don’t want to spend hours opening and searching through every box to find the one that is holding your grandma’s old jewelry or your son’s baseball glove.

Not asking for help

If you have heavy boxes or many boxes to store, it is a good idea to ask a friend for help. Don’t attempt to lift heavy boxes on your own, as this could result in an injury or boxes being dropped and damaged.

Our helpful managers at STOR-N-LOCK Self Storage are always willing to consult with you and give you tips to help make your storage experience as easy as possible. If you have any questions, please don’t be afraid to ask or refer to our FAQ page.
